The main focus is in children rights for education, medication, sanitation and other basic facts and it is also covering mothers and families.

Our programs focus on Early Childhood and Children’s Rights issues in Zanzibar, Dar es Salaam, Moshi (Kilimanjaro) in Tanzania and in Kenya.

WHO IS THIS PROGRAM SUITED TO?

Volunteers who are passionate about teaching and want to help increase access to education in under-resourced communities in Zanzibar. You will be volunteering with the support of our local team and placement staff, you don’t need to be a qualified teacher to participate on this project.

EDUCATION

We focus on to help educational tasks in nursery, primary and secondary schools in Zanzibar as well as adult vocational training. The schools we volunteer in are mostly poor village schools. Interns and volunteers help to develop the primary education and also conduct advocacy work.

Our Educational program is the foundation of everything we do. With full support and training from our experienced project team, you will help us improve the level of English in this friendly community.

VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS

ü Volunteers must be fully vaccinated for COVID 19.

ü Volunteers under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent, guardian or friend who is over 18 to participate in this program.

ü Volunteers aged 16-18 are required to provide IV with parental consent in order to participate on the program independently, and may be asked to provide additional documentation to the local team.

ü All volunteers are required to have adequate volunteer travel insurance.

ü All volunteers must be able to speak basic English.

IMPORTANT THINGS TO KNOW

ü All programs include a Non-Refundable Registration Fee of $300 in addition to the Program Fee of $610. This covers all your Accommodation with Wi-Fi, 3 meals, volunteering permit, construction materials/equipment, transport from and to airport, Pre-departure support from your Program Manager, in-country program orientation, 24/7 support, Certificate of International Volunteering, daily transport to your project, 3 tours included – Stone Town Tour, Spice Tour and Prison Island.

ü 5% international banking fee is added at point of payment.

ü Additional things to budget for include: Visa, flights, travel insurance (mandatory), mandatory fully vaccinated COVID 19, criminal background check and return to the airport when your program finishes (Excluded from Program Fee).

ü Recommended spending money: Volunteers in Zanzibar generally find US$75-150 per week to be sufficient for expenses.

PROGRAM SCHEDULE

This is ongoing program so you can start at any time. The working hours are 6-8 hours per day from Monday to Friday.

VOLUNTEER SCHEDULE EXAMPLE

First Day

On the first day of the volunteering placement, you will be picked up from the airport and taken to your Home Base. Relax and get to know the Home Base. Our Project coordinate will introduce to the staff, other volunteers and an introduction of the project you will be working with.

Weekdays

Work and hours are dependent on the project and placement that each volunteer is working at. 

A typical volunteer day would be as follows:

 

06:30– 08:00

Breakfast at the volunteer Home Base.

08:00 – 12:00

Volunteers leave home and go to their placements. Work and hours are dependent on the project and placement that each volunteer is working at.

12:00– 14:00 

Lunch at the volunteer Home Base or at a restaurant.

14:00 – 16:00

Volunteers go home for to refresh and relax, prepare for the next day or do some shopping and sightseeing. 

19:00 20:30

Dinner at the volunteer Home Base. BBQ nights every 3 weeks.

Weekends

In your free time you can venture out on a safari trip and see – lions, elephants, buffalo, leopards and zebra in Mikumi National Park.

In Zanzibar you can choose additional activities such as Diving, Snorkeling, Jozani forest, Weekend trips to Nungwi, Cycling Tour in Makunduchi or relax in Stone Town and enjoy food markets of Forodhani.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Areas of development include English, arts, music, mathematics and sports teaching. Interns and volunteers also advocate in subjects as recycling, health and hygiene. As a Teaching volunteer you will be based in English-medium or government schools. These have busy classes of between 30 and 50 students, where volunteers make a real impact by enabling more focused teaching.

We also highlight teacher-training activities.

Tools in the classrooms are scarce also the classrooms size can be more than 40 students. Energetic and innovative volunteers are needed.
